Divorce lawyers in Florida, like many others across the country, have struggled to stay relevant to the changing times, but one firm is offering a free legal advice service.
The Florida Divorce Lawyers Association (FDJA) announced on Monday that it will offer “free legal services” to its members, including “financial help, debt settlement, employment, tax preparation and more.”
“The FDJA will be the first state legal service provider to offer this service,” FDJA President Gary Rochon said in a statement.
“It will allow us to offer our members a variety of free legal services that can be accessed through a website and mobile app.
FDJA is dedicated to providing a quality, affordable and reliable legal service to our members.”
According to a 2016 survey conducted by the National Association of Divorce Attorneys (NADA), one-third of all divorce attorneys in the United States do not offer financial assistance to their clients.
“We’ve seen some great success in Florida with this free legal service, but we need to expand this model to other states,” said Michelle Johnson, a partner at the firm.
“A lot of attorneys have tried to offer these services through other means, and I think that’s a mistake.
If people can access this service, it’s great for them.
They’ll feel more comfortable with their decisions.”
Johnson added that while she hopes the FDJA’s offer will reach more people, she still does not see this as a new option.
“I think we’ve seen that we’ve had a lot of people looking to get a divorce.
I don’t think it’s a new model, but I think people are starting to realize they need to go out and find the resources they need,” Johnson said.
